Stewart Island rat eradication scoping study
In 2007, SIRCET secured funding from the Tindall Foundation to investigate the possibility of making Stewart Island free of rats, wild cats and possums. Brent Beaven of DOC was contracted to write the twelve month feasibility study, completed in July 2008. It found that such pest eradication was possible, however there are many technical and social issues to be addressed. Although SIRCET commissioned the study, the decision on whether to pursue it belongs to the Stewart Island/Rakiura community. Waste management
While SIRCET was originally instrumental in the development of the Rakiura Recycling Centre, this project has developed into a business taken on by the Southland District Council. Although SIRCET has not been involved in this area in the last few years, at the request of the community, SIRCET's strategy lists waste minimisation as part of our vision.
