What work would I be doing with SIRCET?
SIRCET aims to control threats to the forest and bird life around the township in Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island. The biggest threats to Stewart Island wildlife are introduced mammals such as rats and possums. Therefore SIRCET's primary activity is pest control. The main volunteer tasks are rat and possum trapping, and track trimming. This work requires no previous experience, but you need to be comfortable walking off-track, handling dead animals, setting easy traps, using hand-tools and working alone. Depending on the time of year, other work available might include plant nursery work, weeding, planting, trap-making and repairs, and bird-monitoring. We have work available for all age groups and fitness levels so please contact us if you have questions. All volunteer contributions are greatly appreciated!
Food & accommodation
There is no charge for volunteering with SIRCET, however because we are a small community organisation we cannot provide food or lodging. There is a range of accommodation available on the island. For more information see: http://www.stewartisland.co.nz/
